What to expect in your first counselling session with me
Starting counselling can feel like a big step. Whether you are managing stress, dealing with a life transition, or working through deeper emotional challenges, your first session is a positive stride towards a healthier, more balanced life.
Many people feel nervous or uncertain about what to expect, and understanding the basics can make the process smoother and more comfortable.
Here’s a guide to help you prepare for your first counselling session:
Before the Session: Intake Forms and Initial Information
Before we sit down for the initial session, I will send you some paperwork to complete, known as intake forms. These forms ask for your details, medical and mental health history, and an outline of your current concerns. This background helps me understand your needs from the start, ensuring that I can provide you with the best care.
Once I have received your completed Intake Forms, I will send you the details of where the session will take place, as well as an invoice containing the payment details.
The first session: Establishing a connection
Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and establish a connection.
The therapeutic relationship is key to a successful therapeutic experience. It’s okay if it takes a session or two to feel fully at ease – or if you don't feel that we are a good fit. You have the full freedom and right to explore alternative options if you wish to do so.
Talking About Your Concerns and Goals
In this session, I will ask about your reasons for seeking counselling and some of your goals for our sessions together, i.e. what would you like to work on or get out of these sessions.
I encourage you to be open and honest about what you’d like to achieve as it will help me to prepare our sessions for your specific needs.
Don’t worry if you’re not clear on your goals yet. Many people start counselling without a concrete idea of what they want to accomplish, and I can help clarify this over time.
Setting Expectations for the Journey
Counselling is a process, and the first session is all about setting a foundation.
Importantly, counselling is collaborative. I am here to support and guide you, but you’re in the driver’s seat. If certain techniques or goals resonate with you (or don’t!), please feel free to tell me and I will adapt them to ensure your experience aligns with your preferences.
Confidentiality and Privacy: Understanding your rights
Confidentiality is a core component of counseling, allowing you to share without fear of judgment or exposure. In your first session, I will explain confidentiality policies in detail – including situations whereby I am legally obligated to disclose information (such as risk of harm to yourself or others). Your privacy and safety is of utmost importance to me.
